This interview features, Author Dean Hamid. Join us as we fall in love with his urban crime thriller series Lovin' Safari.

Hi Dean! Let me first say it is an honor to have you interview with UP. Welcome to the UP HOT SEAT! Before we begin, please tell us a little about yourself.

I'm somewhat of an old school type of guy. Been around for a while, I mean, not in regards to ebooks, etc, but, writing. Different schools of thought in regard to the craft and all. I'm born and raised in Brooklyn; Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Bed-Stuy. I went to an all art and design high school. I studied in broadcasting, and I'm a military vet. I've been a husband, and I'm a father. All these things have shaped me into the man I am, and in all actuality the books I write; articles, commentaries, and the like.

Since you've been writing for a while, what made you decide to become a published author?

I believed then as I believe now, that I can do what a guy like Stephen Spielberg does, or even a Dean Koonz, and write good stories like them. And, I had corresponded with many other authors back in the day, before the ebook phase and I believed then also, that I could be just as successful.

What genres do you write or wish to write?

I would like to do Mysteries, Suspense, and keep the Action-Thrillers in my life, however, I would definitely want to stay along the lines of Urban, not necessarily African-American, but Urban none the less.

Thank you for pointing that out about urban genre. I think urban gets a stigma attached to it because it is predominately assigned to African-American writers whose characters include African-American people. Urban is an amazing genre and some of our best television shows and movies are full of urban writing. Since we are learning about Dean, the author, let's continue and dive into some facts about you. When it comes to writing, are you a morning or a night owl?

I'm a morning person when it comes down to putting the actual words down. Drafting, manuscripting, etc. But, a whole lot of ideas, scenarios, even locations come to me at night. I wake up and make the effort to write down what I remembered, even to the slightest detail.

Tell us a unique writing habit you have?

Well, in this day and age I do not use a laptop. I still use a typewriter. I like the whole banging it out on the keys. It's get my juices going. Not worrying about anything, grammar, punctuation, just straight raw writing.

Now that is truly amazing! I remember learning to type on a typewriter before corrective tape, lol! Now I can't even imagine being without my laptop. Now, if you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it? Why?

Man at Work. Everyday, all day I learn different things about myself. I rise at times, and at times I stumble, but when I do stumble I draw back on something that helped me rise, and then I get up and keep it moving. Almost like a skyscraper being built, but only with no top floor. LOL

What makes your writing stand apart from other authors?

Maybe, because I have no desire to tell the story of the initial hand to mouth stories of the street hustlers. I like to delve more into the what made it come about, and the whole thought and drive that pushes criminal behavior. The inward thoughts and mind-set.

Now that we've learned more about you as an author, let's get to know your work! Tell us about your current book project. Lovin' Safari is the title, and it tells the story of a young man, Zues, who grew up to be an assassin. However, circumstances in his young life alters his destiny and sends him head over heels in love. And, as a result he questions his ability to perform his task because his once ice cold heart is now melting as a result of his love interest, Safari. It's action. It‘s romance. It has a literary flair about it. Something I like to call, a classic.

Ok sounds very interesting. Readers make sure you check it out. Now do you have any upcoming projects that you'd like to reveal to us?

I‘m taking the story in Lovin' Safari and expanding on it. More romance, more action, and definitely more thriller. Expand more on the characters, perhaps even some back story.

What are some of your aspirations for your writing career?

To grow into a successful author. Maybe, even have a book destined for screen play. This way you can see your writing literally come to life.

Would you like to collaborate with other authors on a book project?

Sure. But, I wouldn't want to write the protagonist role. I would like to write off, or around the main character.

We love Indie Authors so we always ask: Name your top 5 favorite books by indie authors?

1. Sa'id Salaam

2. Carlos Torres

3. Deidre LeShay

4. Willie Leblanc

5. Tisha Andrews

Why are they your favorites?

Good stories. At the end of the day, all I want to be is entertained.

Let's get to know more Dean the person. Outside of writing, what are your favorite past times?

Hmmm. Hard to say, writing is my relaxation. I guess, it would be basketball. I love to watch and play the game. I like boxing too, when I feel like training.

Tell us one thing about you that is a little known fact?

I'm a nerd at heart, but to be around me, you'd think otherwise. I'm a sweetheart, if anyhing I can be a little humorous at times. I'm also shy as all outdoors. LOL

Before we go, give us some nuggets of wisdom to help aspiring and even current authors. What is a lesson you've learned since becoming a published author?

To research the business as much as you put into your book. Find out exactly the direction you want to go first before doing anything.

What is the myth about being a published author that you've learned and would like to share?

It's not easy. You've got to really love this to stay with it, for better or worse.

Dean, it was a pleasure to interview you. We look forward to your future works! Please connect with the author and check out his book, Lovin' Safari and be on the lookout for Lovin' Safari II.
